DETAILED ITINERARY |
|
Day 1: Arrival - Luang Prabang
You are warmst welcomed by our guide on arrival at Luang Prabang Airport and transferred to hotel. The royal capital of the former Lane Xang Kingdom, Luang Prabang with its gleaming temple roofs, colonial architecture and stunning mountain backdrop, retains an unique charm rarely found in all Asia. An orientation tour around this picturesque town will give you the opportunity to chat with monks at a local temple. At sunset, ascend the 328 steps to the top of Phou Si Mountain that offers a stunning panoramic view of the surrounding rivers and cityscape. In the evening, wander through the bustling Night Market where ethnic hill tribe minorities peddle their wares of traditional costumes and handicrafts. O/N in Luang Prabang.
Day 2: Luang Prabang - Pakou Caves or Tam Ting Cave - Luang Prabang (B,L)
Rise early at dawn to experience life as a local by watching monks in saffron robes going on their Alms Collection before visiting the local fresh market. Soak in the history of Luang Prabang at the Royal Palace, now the National Museum, Wat Visoun with its iconic Watermelon Stupa and Wat Aham. Watch the adept skills of weavers as they demonstrate the significance of Silk Weaving in Lao culture at the Ock Pop Tok gallery where you will be inspired to design your own scarf.
Afternoon, gently cruise down Mekong River to admire the startling collection of gold-lacquered Buddha statues of all shapes and sizes nestled deep in the massive limestone caverns of the Pak Ou Caves. You will also see the production of traditional Lao textiles and Sa Paper by local artisans. Free Traditional Laos Message O/N in Luang Prabang.
Day 3: Luang Prabang - Elephant Riding - Trekking (B)
The mountainous areas around Luang Prabang Town are also home of many ethnic groups and various stunning waterfalls littered in dense jungle. Today we drive on a rugged road to Lao spirit resort just 15 km out of town. On arrival we see the Asian Elephants and begin a scenic ride of an hour and half along the Nam Khan River though the lush and green forests to the amazing Tad Sae waterfall. This is an enjoyable stop for lunch near the cascade. We get well off the beaten track as we walk through the forest. En route we make stopover at a Khmu Village to explore the simple lifestyle of villagers who are almost fishermen or farmers living from their slash and burn tradition. They even speak a different language but the guide are on hand to help you ask questions. We continue our walk along the mountain side past a new jungle camp before completing a super day. Day 4: Luang Prabang - Xieng Khouang - Phonsavanh - By Car 250 Kms (B)
By road we depart this morning to Xieng Khouang, home to the amazing Plain of Jars. Traveling trough high mountains and karts formations, we have time to stop and visit remote dwellings of ethnic minority villages. Probably you will notice that many houses have looms underneath with which the family's clothes, bags and accessories are manufactured. Late afternoon we'll arrive at Phonsavan, the capital of the Xieng Khoung province. O/N in Phonsavanh.
Day 6: Xieng Khouang - Vang Vieng (B)
Heading out of town we set forth to visit the "Plan of Jars", an impressive archaeological site where hundreds of large stone jars are littered all over the plateau. These huge jars are supposedly over 2,000 years old, but most of archaeologists are still mystified about their purpose. We follow it with a trip to the province's old capital of Muang Khun and the nearby villages. They are home of the Hmong People who are very poor but possess an interesting local culture and a colourful history. Mid-morning depart for a drive down spectacular Route 13 towards Vang
Vieng. Continue to Vang Vieng, nestled along the Nam Song River and framed by
spectacular karst formations housing numerous caves. Visit Tham Jam Cave in the afternoon and stroll through town along the Namsong River.O/N in Vang Vieng

Day 7: Vientiane (B)
The charming and fascinating capital of Laos, Vientiane is small city conjuring up exotic images, with the curious mix of Lao, Thai, Chinese, Vietnamese, French influences.
• Wat Sisaket, the oldest temple still standing in Vientiane. This amazing structure features remarkable frescoes and Buddha statues.
• Haw Pha Kaew which previously housed the famous Emerald Buddha Image.
• Patouxai standing in Lane Xang Avenue. This imposing monument is well known as Vientiane's own Arc de Triomphe and provides a stunning views of the city.
• That Luang Stupa

Day 8: Vientiane - Savannakhet By Flight (B)
After breakfast, stop at Talat Sao, also known as the Morning Market. The Morning Market is the place to look for all kinds of souvenirs including silk and cotton textiles, silver and gold jewelry, woodcarvings and postcards. Mid morning take flight to Savankhet, on arrival transfer to hotel and relax. O/N in Savanakhet
Day 9: Savannakhet - Salavan - Tad Lo - Tad Fane (B)
After breakfast, visit the Provincial Museum, the Dinosaur Museum and That Ing Hang before continuing southwards on Route 13. Turn to the east and the city of Salavan before stopping for lunch near the Tad Lo falls.
After lunch continue to Tad Fane and on the way visit tea and coffee plantations of the Bolaven Plateau. O/N in Tad Fane.
Day 10: Tad Fane - Wat Phu - Elephants - Khong Island (B,L)
After breakfast, transfer by road to Champassak. From here continue to Wat Phou temple, a pre-angkorian Khmer temple and an UNESCO World Heritage site. Return to Champasak for lunch and see former royal mansions and samples of French colonial architecture. Continue to Ban Kiet Ngong a small lao village where you will go for a 90min elephant ride through the forest (2 persons per elephant) and up to Mount Assa. Continue by road to Khong Island, the biggest island in south Laos. O/N in Khong Island
Day 11: Khong Island - Khone Island - Pakse (B,L)
After breakfast, take a local boat to the peaceful islands of Done Det and Done Khone, sites of the only railway ever built in Laos at the end of the 19th century. After a stroll through the palm-fringed villages and lunch continue to the southernmost part of Laos and the imposing Khone Phapheng waterfalls, near the Cambodian border. In the afternoon return to Pakse and stop at the exotic evening market. O/N in Pakse
Day 12: Pakse Departure (B)
After breakfast transfer either to the Thai border or to the airport for your onward flight.
